Botanical Collections of Belarus

About the project

Botanical collections provide full, constant and objective information on a variety of objects in the world of plants. They are an instrument of the botanical science and the most important resource for studies in many other areas of knowledge, including dendrology, agronomy, agriculture, environmental and health protection. Botanical collections are a part of the cultural heritage of Belarus, the result of long-term collective effort by hundreds of people.

National Strategy for the Conservation and Sustainable use of Biological Diversity in the Republic of Belarus, developed for the implementation of the Convention on Biological Diversity, lays emphasis on the importance of botanical collections in conservation of this natural phenomenon (ex situ), in enrichment and conservation of genetic resources of the country.

This project contains collections descriptions, brief information on the history of their formation, systematic composition and conditions of keeping. The work contains lists of 38 collections, which include about 20 thousands exhibits.

The project "Botanical Collections of Belarus" is supported by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection of the Republic of Belarus and is executed by the Central Botanical Garden of the National Academy of Sciences.
